A Wearable Technology Revisited for Cardio-Respiratory Functional Exploration: Stroke Volume Estimation from Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography

چکیده
The objective of the present study is to extract new information from complex signals generated by Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography (RIP). This indirect cardio-respiratory (CR) measure is a well-known wearable solution. We applied time-scale analysis to estimate cardiac activity from thoracic volume variations, witnesses of CR interactions. Calibrated RIP signals gathered from 4 healthy volunteers in resting conditions are processed by Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition to extract cardiac volume signals and estimate stroke volumes. Averaged values of these stroke volumes (SVRIP) are compared with averaged values of stroke volumes determined simultaneously by electrical impedance cardiography (SVICG). There is a satisfactory correlation between SVRIP and SVICG (r=0.76, p<0.001) and the limits of agreement between the 2 types of measurements (±23%) satisfies the required criterion (±30%). The observed underestimation (-58%) is argued. This validates the use of RIP for following stroke volume variations and suggests that one simple transducer can provide a quantitative exploration of both ventilatory and cardiac volumes.

Development of a Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography Module Supporting Multiple Sensors for Wearable Systems
In this paper, we present an RIP module with the features of supporting multiple inductive sensors, no variable frequency LC oscillator, low power consumption, and automatic gain adjustment for each channel. Based on the method of inductance measurement without using a variable frequency LC oscillator, we further integrate pulse amplitude modulation and time division multiplexing scheme into a ...
متن کاملRespiratory Monitoring: Advantages of Inductive Plethysmography over Impedance Pneumography
Inductive plethysmography and impedance pneumography are two non-invasive technologies for measuring respiratory function. The following report describes the advantages of inductive plethysmography, which include greater accuracy and sensitivity; the ability to assess thoracoabdominal coordination; and the minimization of motion artifact. Together, these properties make inductive plethysmograph...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE This study was performed to assess the accuracy of respiratory inductive plethysmographic (RIP) estimated lung volume changes at varying positive end-expiratory pressures (PEEP) during different degrees of acute respiratory failure. METHODS Measurements of inspiratory tidal volume were validated in eight piglets during constant volume ventilation at incremental and de...

This paper proposes accurate respiratory rate estimation using nasal breath sound recordings from a smartphone. Specifically, the proposed method detects nasal airflow using a built-in smartphone microphone or a headset microphone placed underneath the nose. In addition, we also examined if tracheal breath sounds recorded by the built-in microphone of a smartphone placed on the paralaryngeal sp...

Breathing disturbances during snoring have been quantified by face mask pneumotachography and oesophageal catheters. In order to nonobtrusively investigate respiratory mechanics during nonapnoeic snoring in relation to sleep disturbances, we employed calibrated respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP). In 10 snorers, RIP recordings were studied during nonapnoeic snoring without arousals in n...
